About one-third of the participants in the study were children ages 6 to 18, the report said. 

While researchers have been reporting the levels of glyphosate in human urine

samples for years, the CDC’s studies started only recently. 

The CDC’s research involves the amount of human exposure to the herbicide in the United States, as concerns grow about the impact of pesticides in water and food on the health of humans and the environment. 

“People of all ages should be concerned, but I’m particularly concerned for children,” said Phil Landrigan, who worked for years at the CDC and the Environmental Protection Agency and now directs the Program for Global Public Health and the Common Good at Boston College.

“Children are more heavily exposed to pesticides than adults because pound-for-pound they drink more water, eat more food and breathe more air,” Landrigan said. “Also, children have many years of future life when they can develop diseases with long incubation periods, such as cancer. This is particularly a concern with the herbicide glyphosate.”

Lianne Sheppard, professor at the University of Washington’s department of environmental and occupational health sciences, said she expects it will be “disturbing to many people.”

“We know that a large fraction of the population has it in urine, [and] any people will be thinking about whether that includes them,” said Sheppard, who co-authored an analysis in 2019 showing that exposure to glyphosate increases the risk of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Friends have said it was a regime he had tried several times before, although there is no evidence it was linked to his sudden death.

So how safe are these diets and what is their effect on the body?

There are many different kinds of liquid diets but they all have the same aim – to lose weight quickly by eating fewer calories.

They range from fashionable fruit and vegetable juice drinks that promise to detox and cleanse the body to low-calorie shakes and soups.

But experts warn these extreme diets carry health risks and are unsuitable for most people.

The NHS recommends its 800-calories-a-day diet for certain groups only, particularly obese or severely obese people managing type-2 diabetes.

Tried and tested, it comes with lots of support and medical supervision, and contains all the daily nutrients needed – but this is seldom the case with other liquid diets found online.

“Juice diets appeal to people because they want a quick fix – but dieting is really hard,” Aisling Pigott, of the British Dietetic Association, says.

“There is a role for them – but it’s not one size fits all.

“It’s concerning when they are marketed at people who are a healthy weight.”

Fruit and vegetable juice provides lots of minerals and vitamins – but very little protein or fat.

Even fibre would be in short supply unless the whole fruit, including the skin and seeds, was pulped and added.

“You’d feel drained and exhausted after a week,” Dr Gail Rees, associate professor of human nutrition, at the University of Plymouth, says.

A diet that is not nutritionally balanced is not giving the body everything it needs – and “could be very damaging” in the long term.

Iron reserves would be used up, which could lead to anaemia in women, muscle mass would be depleted and the gut, lungs and liver would have to work harder to keep the body functioning normally.

Other potential side-effects include headaches, dizziness, extreme tiredness, diarrhoea or constipation.

Fruit juices, which contain lots of naturals acids, can also wear away enamel on teeth and a lack of calorie intake can make breath smell different.

Losing weight quickly is possible on a liquid diet but the biggest challenge, according to Ms Pigott, is “yo-yo risk” – the danger of piling weight back on again when food intake returns to normal.

The verdict strengthens the call on the federal government to declare bandits ravaging the North-western and the North-central regions as terrorists.

Mohammed Abubakar, the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) of the Federation, had filed an ex-parte application seeking to proscribe the grisly activities of ‘bandits’ who have been waging a relentless war against ordinary Nigerians in the North-west and the North-central States.

The bandits have been vicious in kidnapping and killing their captives across Zamfara, Katsina, Kaduna, Benue and Sokoto states.

While moving the application on Thursday, Mr Abubakar informed the court that President Muhammadu Buhari had approved the proscription of bandits as terrorists.

In his ruling, the judge, Taiwo Taiwo, specifically held that the activities of Yan Bindiga and Yan Ta’adda bandit groups constitute acts of terrorism.

According to court documents, the federal government based its decision on security reports, which confirmed that the bandits were responsible for the “killings, abductions, rapes, kidnappings,” in northern Nigeria.

The government further blamed the group for the growing cases of “banditry, incessant kidnappings for ransom, kidnapping for marriage, mass abductions of school children and other citizens, cattle rustling, enslavement, imprisonment, severe deprivation of physical liberty, torture, rape, sexual slavery, enforced prostitution, forced pregnancy, other forms of sexual violence, attacks and killings in communities and on commuters and wanton destruction of lives and properties in Nigeria, particularly in the North-west and North-central states in Nigeria being carried out by Yan Bindiga and Yan Ta’adda groups and other groups associated with or engaged in the same or similar activities as Yan Bindiga and Yan Ta’adda groups in Nigeria.”

“The activities of Yan Bindiga and Yan Ta’adda groups and other similar groups constitute acts of terrorism that can lead to a breakdown of public order and safety and is a threat to national security and the corporate existence of Nigeria,” the government said.

Ruling

In the ruling, the judge declared the activities of Yan Bindiga and Yan Ta’adda group” and other similar groups in any part of the country as “acts of terrorism and illegality.”

The court proscribed the activities of the group as well as other similar groups in any part of Nigeria, “either in groups or as individuals by whatever names they are called.”

In its ruling, the court restrained “any person or group of persons from participating in any manner whatsoever, in any form of activities involving or concerning the prosecution of the collective intention or otherwise of the Yan Bindiga group and the Yan Ta’adda group under any other name or platform however called or described.”

The decision was made by an influential committee of outside experts who advise the Food and Drug Administration.

In a surprising turn, the panel rejected, by a vote of 16-2, boosters for almost everyone. Members cited a lack of safety data on extra doses and also raised doubts about the value of mass boosters, rather than ones targeted to specific groups.

Then, in an 18-0 vote, it endorsed the extra shot for select portions of the U.S. population — namely, those most at risk from the virus.

That would help salvage part of the White House’s campaign but would still be a huge step back from the far-reaching plan proposed by the administration a month ago to offer booster shots of both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines to practically everybody eight months after they get their second dose.

Friday’s vote was just the first step in the process. The FDA itself is expected to make a decision on boosters in the next few days, but it usually follows the committee’s recommendations.

The offering of boosters is also subject to approval by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. A CDC advisory panel is expected to take up the question on Wednesday. The CDC has said it is considering boosters for older people, nursing home residents and front-line health care workers, rather than all adults.

Separate FDA and CDC decisions will be needed in order for people who received the Moderna or J&J shots to get boosters.

During several hours of vigorous debate Friday, members of the panel questioned the value of offering boosters to almost everybody 16 and over.

“I don’t think a booster dose is going to significantly contribute to controlling the pandemic,” said Dr. Cody Meissner of Tufts University. “And I think it’s important that the main message we transmit is that we’ve got to get everyone two doses.”

Dr. Amanda Cohn of the CDC said: “At this moment it is clear that the unvaccinated are driving transmission in the United States.”

Scientists inside and outside the government have been divided in recent days over the need for boosters and who should get them, and the World Health Organization has strongly objected to rich nations giving a third round of shots when poor countries don’t have enough COVID-19 vaccine for their first.

While research suggests immunity levels in those who have been vaccinated wane over time and boosters can reverse that, the Pfizer vaccine is still highly protective against severe illness and death, even amid the spread of the highly contagious delta variant.

The surprise turn of events could reinforce recent criticism that the Biden administration got out ahead of the science in its push for boosters. President Joe Biden promised early on that his administration would “follow the science,” following disclosures of political meddling in the Trump administration’s coronavirus response.

The FDA panel’s overwhelming initial rejection came despite full-throated arguments about the need for boosters from both Pfizer and health officials from Israel, which began offering boosters to its citizens in July.

Sharon Alroy-Preis of Israel’s Ministry of Health said the booster dose improves protection tenfold against infection in people 60 and older.

“It’s like a fresh vaccine,” bringing protection back to original levels and helping Israel “dampen severe cases in the fourth wave,” she said.

And representatives for Pfizer argued that it is important to shore up immunity before protection against severe disease starts to erode. A company study of 44,000 people showed effectiveness against symptomatic COVID-19 was 96% two months after the second dose, but had dropped to 84% by around six months.

Both Pfizer and the Israeli representatives faced pushback from panelists. Several were skeptical about the relevance of Israel’s experience to the U.S. Another concern was whether third doses would exacerbate serious side effects.

Meissner said he was worried about extra doses for younger age groups, given the risk of heart inflammation that has been seen in mostly younger men after a second dose. While the condition is very rare, he said, it is not clear if that risk would increase with another dose.

Pfizer pointed to Israeli data from nearly 3 million COVID-19 boosters to suggest side effect rates would be similar to that seen after second doses.

Dr. Paul Offit, a COVID-19 vaccine expert at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, said he was supportive of the third dose for adults over 60 or 65, but “I really have trouble” supporting it for anyone down to age 16.

While an extra shot likely will at least temporarily decrease cases with mild or no symptoms, “the question becomes what will be the impact of that on the arc of the pandemic, which may not be all that much,” Offit said.

Pentagon admits drone strike killed civilians

U.S. Marine Corps Gen. Kenneth McKenzie, commander of U.S. Central Command, told reporters on Friday that an Aug. 29 drone strike targeting ISIS actually killed 10 civilians in Afghanistan, not terrorists. 

“As the combatant commander, I am fully responsible for this strike and its tragic outcome,” McKenzie said. 

“I offer my profound condolences to the family and friends of those who were killed,” McKenzie said.

McKenzie’s announcement follows White House press secretary Jen Psaki and others in the administration describing the Aug. 29 drone strike as a success amid the U.S.’s withdrawal from Afghanistan last month. 

But now, the White House is facing even more criticisms on its Afghanistan handling, following harsh blowback it already received when 13 U.S. service members were killed in Kabul by a suicide bomber.

Her suspension has been welcomed by many on the platform.

Professor Gavin Yamey tweeted that he was “pleased”, adding that “Dr Wolf peddles horrific, dangerous anti-vaxx nonsense”.

But some have voiced concern that her suspension was stifling free speech.

Journalist Mary Beth Pfeiffer said Dr Wolf “raised damn good questions about the rush to and ramifications of mass vax. This is unAmerican silencing of dissent”.

In 2019, the US publisher of a book by Dr Wolf cancelled its release after accuracy concerns were raised.

Schlapp does admit Cheney has had a more conservative voting record than Rep. “This is one of those cases where you could actually have a more conservative voting record like Liz Cheney has but failed to understand the most important part of this coalition was, which is staying close to President Trump and his policies, which are overwhelmingly popular,” Schlapp added, noting Stefanik started “defending Donald Trump during the second impeachment and actually both impeachments and she won a lot of hearts and minds.”
