Ethereum – The shift from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake will cut power consumption sharply—and leave some expensive technology searching for new uses.

The Ethereum mining community is a diverse bunch, geographically and demographically. There’s a 28-year-old translator in Ukraine, running computing hardware on his balcony to earn cryptocurrency so he can buy clothing and other necessities. In Argentina, a retiree uses her gaming PC to double her monthly pension. A college student in Canada has mined enough to buy a BMW motorcycle and a modified 2006 Dodge Charger SRT—and pay for gas every month.

As many people even outside of the blockchain world know, a crash in the crypto markets has made the past few months quite painful for anyone whose financial well-being is tied to the currencies. As of June 15, the price of Ether was down about 70% for the year. At the same time, a lesser-known factor—a tectonic shift known as “the Merge”—is set to end Ethereum mining altogether, cutting off earnings for as many as 1 million people. “This will be a huge financial hit and almost a complete loss of a good source of income,” says the Ukrainian translator, who asked to stay anonymous for fear of being robbed.

Bitcoin and Ethereum, the two largest cryptocurrency networks by market value, both record transactions using a process known as proof-of-work, where so-called miners dedicate computer resources toward solving difficult math problems to add blocks of transactions to a public ledger. The miners receive payments in cryptocurrency as a reward. Bitcoin mining, which generally involves specialized gear, has become industrialized; and as mining has moved to data centers, participation by regular people has basically been eliminated. But Ethereum mining relies on the kind of graphics cards found inside typical gaming PCs, and many regular folks can still do it.

Proof-of-work is just a contest to make computers work hard, which means it uses an enormous amount of energy. The environmental toll it takes is one of the primary criticisms of cryptocurrencies. Since Ethereum’s beginnings, its developers have been preparing for a shift to an alternative model called proof-of-stake. Under such a system, people would set aside, or “stake,” a certain amount of Ether, the cryptocurrency of the Ethereum blockchain, to win rewards for running software that properly batches transactions into new blocks and checks the work of other validators. Proof-of-stake could cut the power consumption of the Ethereum network by about 99%. It would also put miners out of a job, a significant blow given the capital investment that goes into setting up operations. Ethereum miners have spent approximately $15 billion on graphics processing units (GPUs), according to Bitpro Consulting, and that doesn’t include ancillary costs like wiring and transformers.

Simp – Shannon was utilized to her socially off-kilter child being harassed by other young men at the non-public school he goes to in Atlanta. But when she got him from school in mid-January and her eighth-grader disclosed to her he was being known as a “simp,” Shannon, who’s just utilizing her first name to secure her child’s character, didn’t have a clue what to think. “He’s revealing to me this and I’m driving and I’m attempting to figure out it,” she said. “I’d never heard the word.”

“He advised me, ‘It essentially implies that I’m simply being pleasant to young ladies since I like them,'” she said. “I resembled, stand by, my child is being singled out for being pleasant to young ladies?”

Her child had revealed to her he’d as of late been placed in the “companion zone” by one of the young ladies, who made it clear she wasn’t keen on dating him. They had kept on being cordial.

“You do this load of things as a parent to bring up your child right, to be pleasant to everybody, particularly kids without numerous companions,” Shannon said. “What’s more, you never believe that by making your child the decent one you could be making them an objective for menaces.”

While numerous guardians may be new to “simp,” odds are your tween or youngster has utilized or possibly heard the term.

Simp hashtags are wild on TikTok. Instagram has more than 350,000 posts labeled #simp and there are Facebook bunches dedicated to simps and simping (it tends to be an action word, as well).

Contingent upon who you converse with, there is some discussion on the word’s present utilization and how much (if by any means) it has advanced over the long haul. While simp’s way-back beginnings are associated with “simpleton,” its present use is connected to West Coast American rappers like Too Short, who originally utilized it during the 1980s in a manner that indicates something contrary to “pimp” in his melody “Pimpology.”

In 1992, Boyz II Men delivered a melody called “Sympin’ Ain’t Easy,” utilizing an alternate spelling of the word and inspiring disappointed longing.

Obama – A new book detailing the 2020 election claims that former President Barack Obama privately urged President Joe Biden not to run for the White House in 2020, and was “enamored” with one of his primary opponents.

“Obama’s fears about Biden and his team ran deep — deeper than defeat,” wrote Jonathan Allen and Amie Parnes in their new book “Lucky: How Joe Biden Barely Won the Presidency,” according to excerpts from The Washington Free Beacon.

“Obama worried that his former vice president would embarrass himself on the campaign trail and that the people around him would not be able to prevent a belly-flop.”

They add that Obama repeatedly pushed Biden not to run, writing that “it had stung Biden badly in 2015 when Obama made clear his preference for Hillary Clinton.”

The authors note that “Obama, like much of his brain trust, seemed to be enamored with a former Texas congressman, Beto O’Rourke,” in the 2020 Democratic Party primary.

The former president previously praised O’Rourke for his Senate run, saying in 2018 that he was an “impressive young man who ran a terrific race in Texas,” when asked on CNN’s “The Axe Files” in an interview.

“The reason I was able to make a connection with a sizable portion of the country was because people had a sense that I said what I meant,” Obama said at the time, according to CNN.

“And that’s a quality that, as I look at what I’m sure will be a strong field of candidates in 2020, many of whom are friends of mine and whom I deeply respect — what I oftentimes am looking for first and foremost is, do you seem to mean it? Are you in this thing cause you have a strong set of convictions that you are willing to risk things for?”

Cuomo – Scandal-plagued New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has been hit by a new bombshell report that his top aides altered the data on the number of nursing home residents who died in the pandemic.

The latest developments were reported late Thursday by The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal.

According to the report, Cuomo’s top aides, concerned about state health officials’ numbers,  fudged the data.

The number, more than 9,000 by June, the Times says, was not yet public. The aides rewrote the report to take the figure out, the Times said, citing interviews and documents.

The report in July focused only on residents who died in long-term care facilities, leaving out those who died in hospitals after becoming sick in nursing homes, the Journal said.

The report said 6,432 nursing-home residents died from the outbreak, which was a significant undercount of the death toll attributed to the state’s most vulnerable population, the Journal added, citing sources with knowledge of the report’s production.

“The out-of-facility data was omitted after DOH (Department of Health) could not confirm it had been adequately verified,” Beth Garvey, a special counsel and senior adviser to Cuomo, told the Journal and the Times late Thursday, claiming the additional data did not change the report’s conclusion.

After the state attorney general revealed recently that thousands of nursing home resident deaths had been undercounted, Cuomo finally released the complete count, saying he had withheld it out of concern that the Trump administration might use it for political purposes against the state.

The Times report suggests that Cuomo and his aides began concealing the data much earlier.

This unfolded even as Cuomo, now also at the center of an expanding scandal involving allegations of sexual harassment, was starting work on a book touting his achievements in the pandemic.

flamethrower – Kentucky man is going viral for his unconventional idea of clearing the snow in his driveway with a flamethrower.

Timothy Browning stunned fans after a relative filmed him standing in his driveway wearing nothing but a white bathrobe, socks, slippers and a hat, recreating Cousin Eddie from the iconic holiday movie “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.”

While his attire alone would turn heads, it was Browning’s unique method of removing snow from his driveway with a flamethrower that won the Internet.

“Browning snow services removal now available!” a woman filming Browning, of Ashland, Ky., says at the start of the video.

In the nearly 30-second clip, Browning chugs a beer and throws it on the ground as he casually watches the giant flames in front of him melt away the flakes.

“God bless American rednecks!” Browning wrote on Facebook, where he posted the footage.

Browning’s alternative to shoveling was also caught on camera by an onlooker named Jordan Podunavac. His video was posted to Twitter by a user named Chad who wrote, “Here’s one way to do some quick snow removal, by flamethrower.”

The tweet was viewed over 120,000 times after it was posted on Christmas. Viewers were quick to react on social media, referring to Browning as a “genius” and asking how to get their hands on a flamethrower.

Vienna shooting – AT LEAST three people are dead including a terrorist “in a bomb vest” and 14 others are in hospital after a gun rampage in Vienna last night.

A huge manhunt was underway overnight for at least one suspect after “several” gunmen armed with rifles opened fire near a synagogue and busy restaurants at six sites in the Austrian capital.

Women run to safety as Vienna after residents were warned to stay indoors

A police officer was critically injured in a shootout with the terrorists as they ran amok and fled on foot.

Austria’s chancellor condemned it as a “hideous terrorist attack” as officials ordered residents to stay indoors.

Gunfire erupted just after 8pm local time on Monday – when the city centre was bustling on the last night pubs and cafes were open before a new Covid lockdown starting at midnight.

Disturbing video emerged online apparently showing the moment the first victim was gunned down at random close to the Stadttempel synagogue.

A gunman in light clothing is seen marauding up the cobbled street carrying a long firearm before unleashing a hail of bullets at the young man, who is pinned to a shop window in fear.

The killer jogs past him as he collapses to the ground – then callously turns back and shoots him again with a pistol.

Other footage showed sparks flying as terrorists shot at police in a town square, and a pool of blood between the tables outside a cafe.

Injured victims were also seen covered in blood as they were treated by emergency crews in pictures shared on social media.

The city mayor confirmed two victims were killed – including a woman who died later from her injuries – and 14 wounded were in hospital.

One of the attackers was shot dead by police.

Local reports claimed he was wearing an explosives belt which was defused by experts after he was taken down.

Interior Minister Karl Nehammer called the attackers “heavily armed and dangerous.”

He said: “We have brought several special forces units together that are now searching for the presumed terrorists.

“According to what we currently know, there is at least one attacker who is still on the run.”

Officers put up road blocks checking all cars and taxis to leaving the city, and security was beefed up at other Jewish sites.

Meanwhile, the Czech authorities stepped up border checks in an effort to stop the attackers fleeing over the frontier.

Lockdown – “Friendships can deteriorate very quickly if you don’t invest in them – it probably only takes about three months,” says evolutionary psychologist Prof Robin Dunbar.

So the social strain of lockdown, while hopefully short-term, could have some long-term effects on some friendships, he says.

In a paper in the Royal Society journal, Proceedings A, Prof Dunbar has delved into the ways in which our social connections will be changed by lockdown.

The University of Oxford academic’s insight into those effects comes from a social world far from Zoom quizzes and Whatsapp groups. The roots of our friendships, he says, lie in the social lives of non-human primates.

For many of those primates, strong social bonds – being part of a “stable group” – means protection from predators and rivals.

That goes some way to revealing why many of us treasure our closest friends as though our lives depend on them. In our evolutionary history, they did.

And those bonds require a great deal of maintenance.

In both monkeys and humans, research shows that the quality of a relationship – measured by how likely a fellow monkey, ape or human is to step up and defend you – depends directly on the time invested in it.

“We have to see people surprisingly often to maintain a friendship,” explains Prof Dunbar, from the University of Oxford. And, because nurturing friendships requires all that time and cognitive capacity, we can only keep up a limited number of social connections.

“In lockdown, many people are forming new friendships with people on their street and in their community for the first time,” says Prof Dunbar.

“So when we emerge from lockdown, some of our more marginal friendships might be replaced by some of these new ones.”

UK employers – Fifty of the biggest UK employers questioned by BBC have said they have no plans to return all staff to the office full-time in the near future.

Some 24 firms said that they did not have any plans in place to return workers to the office.

However, 20 have opened their offices for staff unable to work from home.

It comes as many employees return to work from the summer holidays with the reality of a prolonged period of home working becoming increasingly likely.

The BBC questioned 50 big employers ranging from banks to retailers to get a sense of when they expected to ask employees to return to the office.

One of the main reasons given for the lack of a substantial return was that firms could not see a way of accommodating large numbers of staff while social distancing regulations were still in place.

Many companies said they were offering choice and flexibility to those who want to return, particularly in the banking and finance sectors.

A few firms have already announced they have no plans to return to the office until late autumn, and Facebook has said it does not plan a return of employees until July 2021.

Some smaller businesses are deciding to abandon their offices altogether. Tara Tomes runs a PR agency with an office in the heart of Birmingham’s business district.

Her team of eight cannot fit in the space they have if they are to obey social distancing guidelines and she will not be renewing the office lease in September.

“I personally don’t want to force my team back onto public transport,” she told the BBC.

“Not having four walls around us won’t change the dynamic or culture of the team. If anything it will make us more pioneering in the way the world of work is going.”
