President braked to speak with a crowd and tipped over, saying the ‘toe cages’ on his bike got caught

The president was near the end of a bike ride with the first lady, Dr Jill Biden, near Rehoboth Beach where the couple are celebrating their 45th wedding anniversary.

The 79-year-old president, flanked by Secret Service agents, was travelling at some speed toward a turn, before he braked to speak to a crowd wishing him “Happy Father’s Day” and tipped over.

Dr Jill Biden had already made the turn and missed her husband’s fall. Biden’s unexpected dismount came after he stopped and was unable to release his bike shoes from the toe cages on the pedals.

Asked if he was OK, Biden responded: “I’m good.” Asked what caused the fall, Biden said the “toe cages” on his bike got caught.

He briefly engaged with reporters. Asked if he is satisfied with progress on gun legislation, Biden said: “In Delaware, I am. Did you see what they did in Delaware? Passed an assault weapons ban. They did what I did years ago. But I am happy with the progress.”

Biden, wearing bright blue shoes, grey T-shirt, navy shorts and a white helmet, got back on his bike. “Alright guys, see you,” he said.

The Nigerian technology firm Online Integrated Solutions (OIS), founded by Mr. Mahmood Ahmadu opened its newest office in Cairo, Egypt, to facilitate important administrative tasks relating to visa and passport applications, Bank Verification Number (BVN), and national identity enrolment services for Nigerians living in Egypt and the neighbouring Arab countries.

The Centre was opened as part of activities of the Nigeria–Egypt Trade Conference and Exhibition organised by the newly formed Nigeria Egypt Cultural & Socio-Economic Forum (NECSEF), which took place in Cairo, Egypt, on the 10th – 12th October 2022.

The office was formally opened by Nigeria’s Minister of State for Works and Housing, Umar Ibrahim El-Yakub and Senator Zaki Abas of the Egyptian Parliament and Ambassador Nura Rimi, the Nigerian Ambassador to Egypt, alongside many other dignitaries.  

The new building is situated at 51 Michel Bakom Street Dokki, Cairo, and serves as the Secretariat of the Nigeria-Egypt Cultural and Socio-Economic Forum (NECSEF), co-locates OIS, which provides services for Nigerian Foreign missions and Nigerians in the Diaspora.

Mr. Mahmood Ahmadu, who is also the chairman of NECSEF, explained that the building is an important symbol in promoting Nigeria-Egypt economic and business relations.

He said with the presence of OIS in Egypt, Nigerians in the country can now enroll and obtain BVN and National Identity Number (NIN) without having to travel to Nigeria.

The firm, he said, also provides administrative and payment support for Nigeria passport applications.

According to the founder of the leading software solutions provider, established in 2012, the company also supports and facilitates a wide range of online applications across 34 major cities around the world.

‘‘Our services also include the provision of biometric visa administrative services, financial services, bank verification number, account opening services (for Nigerian banks), national ID biometric capture, and medical tourism,’’ he said.

He said that the Forum aims to promote its members in Nigeria and Egypt and facilitates the establishment of mutually beneficial partnerships between Nigerian and Egyptian businesses.

According to Ahmadu, the objectives of the Forum is to organize conferences, lectures, seminars, exhibitions, and other business activities while also encouraging economic development and trade relations between citizens living in both countries.

High-level Egyptian business executives and officials were also present at the inauguration of the building.

According to a statement by Executive Assistant to the Chairman NAGCC, Souzan Owji, the agreement was signed in Dubai, United Arab Emirates on the margins of EXPO 2020, where President Muhammadu Buhari and other world leaders attended.

The statement said the partnership will unleash many business investments that will be finalised in the coming months.

Sanders, in an interview with NPR, said that he is planning to introduce legislation Thursday that would raise the corporate tax rate to 35%, higher than the 28% that Biden has proposed. The corporate rate is currently 21%, which was cut from 35% in President Donald Trump’s 2017 tax overhaul.

The push for even steeper tax increases demonstrates that Democrats are divided on the scope of the levy hikes they should pursue as they look for ways to finance infrastructure, climate change programs, and other priorities. Democrats largely agree that businesses and wealthy households should pay higher taxes, but they have yet to debate the specifics of those increases.

Yet Sanders’ proposal is certain to face fierce opposition from Republicans, who make up half of the Senate, and misgivings from some moderate Democrats.

Sanders, a Vermont independent who caucuses with Democrats, also told NPR he would introduce a second bill that will create a surtax on the estates of the richest Americans. As Budget Committee chairman, his panel doesn’t have direct jurisdiction over the tax code, but Sanders said he sees his committee taking a broad approach to economic issues.

Cuomo – New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s office cleared the way on Sunday for an independent attorney with subpoena powers to investigate allegations against him of sexual misconduct.

The governor’s office backtracked on its original plan to choose its own investigator after widespread criticism from fellow Democrats.

“We will hire a law firm, deputize them as attorneys of our office, and oversee a rigorous and independent investigation,” New York Attorney General Letitia James said in a statement.

Cuomo, one of the nation’s most well-known Democratic politicians whose popularity soared during the early months of the pandemic, has been accused by two former aides of sexual misconduct, sparking criticism from fellow Democrats that ranged from calls for his resignation to appeals for an independent investigation into his behavior.

Responding to the latest allegations that emerged on Saturday, the governor denied making any sexual advances and initially ordered what he said would be a “full and thorough outside review” led by a former federal judge, Barbara Jones.

But following sharp rebukes from Democrats, Cuomo reversed that decision – and issued a statement late on Sunday saying he “never intended to offend anyone or cause harm.”

Cuomo said he is often jocular around the office and in public, citing his frequent press conferences that included plenty of banter with members of the media.

“I now understand that my interactions may have been insensitive or too personal and that some of my comments, given my position, made others feel in ways I never intended,” Cuomo said in a statement.

Cuomo on Saturday ordered what he said would be a “full and thorough outside review” led by Jones. But that move was quickly rejected by leading Democratic figures including U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, who said she found the accounts of Cuomo’s former aides Lindsey Boylan and Charlotte Bennett “extremely serious and painful to read.”

There were also demands for an independent probe from several other Democrats. White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki told CNN’s State of the Union that President Joe Biden supported such an investigation. Others, including New York State Senator Alessandra Biaggi and New York City Councilman Carlos Menchaca, went further, echoing Republican calls for Cuomo to resign.

Rep. Mo Brooks of Alabama said Tuesday he’ll object when Congress convenes Jan. 6 to count certificates of electoral votes, usually a mostly ceremonial process confirming the results of the presidential election.

President Donald Trump so far has refused to concede — citing claims of fraud — and urged his supporters to fight on. Brooks said he would press ahead.

“If you surrender, there is zero chance of success,” Brooks said in an interview. “Fighting yields a better chance than surrender, so I fight.”

Presidential electors in the 50 states and the District of Columbia met on Monday to affirm Biden’s victory on Nov. 3 with 306 electoral votes to Trump’s 232. Biden also won the popular vote by 7 million ballots. Courts at the state and federal level, including the U.S. Supreme Court, have rejected efforts to overturn the election results.

Brooks, 66, dismissed McConnell’s statement earlier in the day that the Electoral College settled the matter and offering his congratulations to Biden on his election.

“It’s exactly what you’d expect from Senator McConnell,” the five-term Republican said, declining to elaborate. “Senator McConnell is not the key to this. The key are the American voters.”

The law allows for members of Congress to object to votes from any given state. Unless a member of both the House and the Senate object in writing though, the process can’t go forward. Brooks said he hasn’t asked any senator to raise an objection and doesn’t know whether one will. Like Trump, Brooks made claims challenging the legitimacy of the vote.

“It depends on whether a senator is willing to fight for our republic and the election system that is the underpinning for it,” Brooks said. “If a senator joins in the fight for our republic, then we would object on a state-by-state basis as that state’s name is called.”

John Thune of South Dakota, the No. 2 Senate Republican, said Monday that any challenge to the electoral votes is “not going anywhere.” McConnell, during a call on Tuesday, told GOP senators to refrain from joining any effort to object, according to a person familiar with the matter. Politico reported McConnell’s warning earlier.

“I learned yesterday for the first time that the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Delaware advised my legal counsel, also yesterday, that they are investigating my tax affairs,” Hunter Biden said in a statement. “I take this matter very seriously but I am confident that a professional and objective review of these matters will demonstrate that I handled my affairs legally and appropriately, including with the benefit of professional tax advisors.”

A well-placed government source told Fox News that Hunter Biden is a subject/target of the grand jury investigation. According to the source, a “target” means that there is a “high probability that person committed a crime,” while a “subject” is someone you “don’t know for sure” has committed a crime. 

The source said President-elect Biden is not a subject of any grand jury investigation at this time.

The source also tells Fox News that this investigation was predicated, in part, by Suspicious Activity Reports (SARs) regarding suspicious foreign transactions. 

Another source familiar with the investigation tells Fox News that the SARs were regarding funds from “China and other foreign nations.”

A Treasury Department official, who did not comment on the investigation, spoke broadly about SARs, telling Fox News that SARs are filed by financial institutions “if there is something out of the ordinary about a particular transaction.” 

The official told Fox News that the mere filing of a SAR does not mean there has been a criminal act, or violation of regulations, but instead, flags that a transaction is “out of the ordinary” for the customer. The official noted, though, that a SAR could be part of a money laundering or tax investigation.

The investigation, according to a source familiar with the matter, began in 2018.

In a separate statement, the Biden-Harris Transition team said: “President-elect Biden is deeply proud of his son, who has fought through difficult challenges, including the vicious personal attacks recent months, only to emerge stronger.”

Two sources familiar with the investigation tell Fox News that the investigation includes looking at the laptop purportedly belonging to Hunter Biden. 

In October, Fox News first reported that the FBI subpoenaed a laptop and hard drive purportedly belonging to Hunter Biden in connection with a money-laundering investigation in late-2019.

The opposition has demanded a re-run of the October 28 vote, citing widespread irregularities, and called for peaceful protests on Monday against the outcome, which returned President John Magufuli to office with 84 percent of the vote.

Those arrested included Freeman Mbowe, chair of the Chadema opposition party; Godbless Lema,a former member of parliament; Isaya Mwita, a former mayor of Dar es Salaam; and Boniface Jacob, the former mayor of Ubungo municipality.

“We arrested four people including Freeman Mbowe last night and this morning we arrested three others,” said the Dar es Salaam police chief Lazaro Mambosasa.

“We arrested them in a meeting to organise the protests which we already banned. Some of these people travelled from upcountry to Dar es Salaam and are trying to use youths to take it to the streets.”

Mambosasa said those arrested had “admitted that they were organising criminal activities such as setting petrol stations, markets, vehicles and some government offices on fire.”

Mbowe, who was brutally assaulted in what he said was a politically-motivated attack in June, tweeted that his life was “in danger” on the eve of the election, accusing police of raiding his hotel.

Emmanuel Mvula, campaign manager with the ACT Wazalendo party, told The Associated Press news agency on Monday security forces were deployed in the commercial hub of Dar es Salaam, where the two main opposition parties planned to march to the national electoral commission. The arrests, and a heavy security presence, appeared to have deterred potential protesters, and demonstrations never took place.

A joint statement issued later by Chadema’s presidential candidate Tundu Lissu and ACT Wazalendo leader Zitto Kabwe said Mbowe and the other Chadema leaders now face “terrorism-related offenses, which mean that they will not be eligible for bail”.

Lissu and Kabwe added: “We believe that there have been attempts to arrest the two of us.” Scores of ACT Wazalendo members remain in custody in the semi-autonomous region of Zanzibar, they said.

The statement called on other countries to condemn the Tanzanian government for its “tyrannical behaviour” and said protest efforts will continue.
