As a matter of fact, the Buhari government has racked up egregious human rights records more than any other administration before it. In 2017, the United States Department of State released a convicting exposition on this villainy.

President Buhari shares paternity with Paul Biya of Cameroon in leadership style. Both men are joined by the umbilicus of repression and abrasion.

In 2010, Bertrand Teyou, an author, was sentenced to two years imprisonment for insulting the wife of Biya, Chantal. The Cameroonian Government filed charges against him for this spectacular reason.

Under Biya, Southern Cameroon has become the scene of a volcanic crisis – killings, illegal detentions and arrests. Specifically, the government is zeroing in on dissenting voices in effecting these violations.

I think, the situation is much more execrable in Nigeria than in Cameroon.

Amnesty International encapsulates it in these words: ‘’The human rights situation in Nigeria is marked by serious human rights violations such as extrajudicial executions, arbitrary arrests and detentions, torture and other ill-treatment, enforced disappearances, violence against women and girls, restrictions on the rights to freedom of expression, association and peaceful assembly, mass forced evictions, environmental pollution and lack of accountability for human rights violations and abuses.’’

As a matter of fact, the Buhari government has racked up egregious human rights records more than any other administration before it. In 2017, the United States Department of State released a convicting exposition on this villainy.

“Impunity remained widespread at all levels of Buhari government.

“The government did not adequately investigate or prosecute most of the major outstanding allegations of human rights violations by the security forces or the majority of cases of police or military extortion or other abuse of power.

“Authorities generally did not hold police, military, or other security force personnel accountable for the use of excessive or deadly force or for the deaths of persons in custody.
“State and federal panels of inquiry investigating suspicious deaths generally did not make their findings public,” it said.

I have studied the charges levelled against Omoyele Sowore, publisher of SaharaReporters, and they ossify my position that the gentleman is being put through a mill of thistles and thorns for being a relentless critic of the administration.

He is charged with ‘’insulting’’ the President, and for transferring money from New York to Nigeria? What a phenomenal charge? Obviously, Sowore’s only crime is that he has a roaring voice which puts the foundations of Aso Rock to fright.

And does it mean words cannot change the General, but they get to him?

Really, the cyberstalking law, by which Sowore is charged, was fashioned under President Jonathan. This was, perhaps, the former President’s response to social media criticism at the time. But the law, being defective, was never applied under him.

Jonathan was vilified, abused and defamed but not one Nigerian was incarcerated or charged with ‘’treason’’. In fact, in the North, coffins with photos and semblances of Jonathan were coursed through the streets by dissenters but not a single protester was detained. And he was even stoned in Yola on his way to Taraba.

These were clearly grievous offences that are punishable by the law. But a democrat will see beyond an act and ask, ‘’why is this happening? Why are citizens angry?’’

Although Jonathan was not without freckles, he exercised his own brutish aspect with the clampdown on media organisations.

Really, only a non-performing government will be afraid of citizens’ protests or interpret civil actions as subversion. Only a failing administration will be extremely irritated by criticisms and divergent opinions.

In the case of Sowore, he has exercised himself in the discipline of civil opposition. He has only used his voice as a protected child of the Nigerian constitution.

Section 39(1) of the 1999 constitution establishes that “Every person shall be entitled to freedom of expression, including the freedom to hold opinions and to receive and impart information without interference.”

This is the grundnorm to which all laws submit. This is the pillar on which our democracy is built.

The charges cannot stand. But why do dictators rise in AFRICA? It is because of the people, who do nothing; who enable them and who only pray for an end to their suffering.

The Governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, says to stop the farmer-herder violent crisis in Nigeria, the President Muhammadu Buhari administration should ban herdsmen from taking their cattle to the southern region of the country for grazing.

He stated this at a wedding ceremony of the son of Senator Kabiru Ibrahim Gaya — Ibrahim Khalil — in Sokoto State on Saturday.

“There is no better way to improve their lives if you don’t prevent their migration from the North to the Central and Southern parts of Nigeria. That movement should be banned, otherwise the Fulani would continue to suffer and the security problem in the country would continue,” the governor said.

Ganduje added: “We cannot ask a state to implement Ruga where the indigenes are not Fulani. It is for states that can cater to the Fulani and improve their herdsmanship.

“That is why we are developing grazing area or Ruga in Kano State so that the Fulani can be in one place, they can be educated and enjoy all the social services like other people of the state, including health, justice and security. So that the type of herdsmanship they are doing will be improved and they can produce more cows, more milk and prosper economically.”

The Cabinet currently oversees 24[2]Federal Ministries, each responsible for some aspect of providing government services, as well as a number of parastatals (government-owned corporations).

The ministries and parastatals are staffed by career civil servants. Each is headed by a Permanent Secretary, a senior civil servant appointed by the Head of the Civil Service. ASUU – The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Sunday described President Muhammadu Buhari’s policy on education as “wicked and criminal against the needs of Nigerian youth”.

The union accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) government of “a deliberate plan to starve public education with funds in order to deny Nigerian youths the right to know and challenge misrule”.

Chairman, University of Ibadan chapter of ASUU, Professor Deji Omole, in a statement made available to DAILY POST, lamented that “the sacrifices of understaffed and underpaid Nigerian academic will be futile if President Buhari does not increase education funding”.

Omole insisted that the University of Ibadan is presently groaning due to paucity of funds, insufficient staff, decayed infrastructure and bad laboratories.

According to the ASUU chief, “education is not the priority of the Buhari government”.

He lamented that over 500,000 Nigerian children who desire public university education are rejected annually due to poor funding, decayed infrastructure and reduced manpower.

Professor Omole said unless urgent steps are taken to cater for the needs of the Nigerian children, many of them will fight back with crime.

He said, “APC Government failure to fund education is a design to kill public universities. University of ibadan is groaning terribly due to paucity of funds.

“Retired academics can not be replaced because government deliberately refused to make budgetary provision for growth and development.

“This crisis has led to the staff on ground being overworked leading to early deaths of many of our colleagues. Education is not the priority this government.

“Due to paucity of funds many universities including university of Ibadan, the nation’s premier university can not admit many qualified candidates into the universities.

“This is dangerous to the society as the rejected qualified and brilliant candidates may eventually take to crimes because the country has rejected them. The policy is not only wicked but criminal.”

President Muhammadu Buhari has awarded a pass mark to the efforts of the Acting Inspector General of Police Muhammad Adamu, saying the fact that the IG has been losing weight is evidence that he is working very hard at securing the nation.

Buhari spoke on Sunday on arrival from his 10-day private visit to the United Kingdom.

In a video tweeted by a journalist at the VOA, Saleh Shehu Ashaka, via his verified Twitter handle @AshakaSaleh, a reporter had asked the President: “Are we likely to see a different approach in the fight against insecurity, especially kidnapping, which is a big issue now Sir?”

The President responded: “You know, I have just seen the IG, he is… I think he is losing weight; so, I think he is working very hard.”

Muhammadu Buhari GCFR (born 17 December 1942) is a Nigerian politician currently serving as the President of Nigeria, in office since 2015. He is a retired major general in the Nigerian Army and previously served as the nation’s head of state from 31 December 1983 to 27 August 1985, after taking power in a military coup d’état.[4][5] The term Buharism is ascribed to the Buhari military government.[6][7]

He unsuccessfully ran for the office of president of Nigeria in the 20032007, and 2011 general elections. In December 2014, he emerged as the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress for the March 2015 general elections. Buhari won the election, defeating the incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan. This marked the first time in the history of Nigeria that an incumbent president lost to an opposition candidate in a general election. He was sworn in on 29 May 2015. In February 2019, Buhari was re-elected President, defeating his closest rival Atiku Abubakar by over 3 million votes.

This formed the opinion of Nigerians who led a protest to the United States Embassy in Abuja on Monday, January 27, 2019, to express the grievances following America’s reaction to the sacking of Justice Walter Onnoghen as the country’s number-one chief law officer.

President Muhammadu Buhari had on Friday, January 25, 2019, suspended Onnoghen over alleged none declaration of some of his assets. Subsequently, Justice Tanko Mohammed was sworn in an acting Chief Justice of Nigeria.

The American Embassy alongside the European Union, some senior legal practitioners had expressed concerns over the manner in which Onnoghen was suspended.

Speaking at the protest, Princess Ajibola urged America to support the Nigerian government war against corruption.

The recent happenings in the country with regards to the Judicial arm of government has indeed caused Nigeria untold embarrassment especially with the admittance of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen, that he forgot to declare some of his assets as mandated by the law,” Ajibola said.

For long Nigerians have yearned for a leader who would confront the all-powerful judiciary in the country. The action of President Muhammadu Buhari against the Chief Justice of Nigeria is an action for reclaiming the soul of Nigeria.

“We are by this medium letting the world know that Nigerians are 100% in support of the action of our president. If our president does not do it for his country, is it America or Britain that would do it for us?

Nigeria has moved up four places from 148th to 144th position in the 2018 corruption perception index (CPI) compiled by Transparency International.

According to Transparency International, the 2018 CPI ranking draws on 13 surveys and expert assessments to measure public sector corruption in 180 countries and territories, giving each a score from zero (highly corrupt) to 100 (very clean).

Despite Nigeria’s upward movement in the new ranking, the country’s CPI score did not improve from the 27 points that it scored in the 2017 ranking, making it drop from 136th position.

While Côte d’Ivoire and Senegal were identified as significant improvers in the new CPI ranking, Nigeria was listed as a country to watch alongside Angola, Botswana, South Africa and Kenya.

TI’s report noted that despite President Muhammadu Buhari‘s positive steps to combat corruption, they have not yielded desired results.

The report read, “Nigeria’s Buhari administration took a number of positive steps in the past three years, including the establishment of a presidential advisory committee against corruption, the improvement of the anti-corruption legal and policy framework in areas like public procurement and asset declaration, and the development of a national anti-corruption strategy, among others.

“However, these efforts have clearly not yielded the desired results. At least, not yet.”

President Buhari’s anti-corruption fight has been plagued with allegations that he’s being partisan and shielding his close associates from the law while aggressively targeting people in the opposition.

With the 76-year-old seeking re-election in the February 16, 2019 presidential election, he has ramped up on his promise to jail looters and ensure they return stolen loots to the nation’s treasury.
