Nigerian High Commission – A 32-year-old Nigerian, Mr. Ewohime Apkovweta, has been accused of causing thousands of pounds worth of damages to diplomatic cars at the Nigerian High Commission in London.

According to the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Apkovweta had approached the  High Commission to collect his passport at 2pm but was told the collection of passports closed at 1pm. He, however, insisted on collecting the passport and the officials requested his collection slip which he could not produce.

The Commission said, “He left agitated and returned from a nearby hotel to destroy about seven cars, some belonging to the mission, and some to guests who parked nearby.”

The Commission added that his attempt to destroy the High Commissioner’s car failed because the car was bulletproof.

Knife crimeHundreds of British teenagers are being sent by their parents to East Africa to avoid knife crime in the UK, representatives of the Somali community say. Why are they taking this drastic choice?

Some names have been changed to protect the identity of the interviewees.

“In those few years I was doing my A-levels it was tough. Just seeing people being dropped every other day, being stabbed,” Yusuf tells the Victoria Derbyshire programme from his new home in Kenya.

“London’s not the place to be for a teenager.”

Yusuf was born and raised in London but moved to Nairobi after a close friend in his neighbourhood was stabbed to death.

It is a decision an increasing number of parents are taking, for their children’s safety.

Of the 100 people stabbed to death in the UK so far this year, 8% were of Somali heritage, according to the Rise Projects which works with young British Somalis in north London.

Jamal Hassan mentors young men in London, many from Somali families. He explains parents “want to protect that child by all means necessary”.

“If it means that child doesn’t finish school, college, university or he will not have a good job by the time you come for them the future is not really important.

“What’s important is that child’s life.”

One mother who had sent her child to Africa told him she could now sleep at night, because she knew any police sirens she heard were not for her son.

Jamal went to Kenya as a teenager, when he says problems for him in London “were at their peak”.

He says there are parallels with the present day.

“One of the things I’ll never forget, is the fact that when you walk in the streets in Kenya you don’t have to look over your shoulder.

“Here I could travel in and out of the city, go and visit whoever I wanted, and it was good. I felt a sense of freedom.

“But for these kids [in London that can be] life and death.”

‘Permanent damage’

Others, such as Abdul, who is in his early 20s, left London because they had started to get into trouble with the police.

“When I came here it was like a clean sheet,” Abdul said.

“No-one knew me, no-one knows my history. There [in London], you have people that look like you going after you.

“My mum feels I’m much safer here than anywhere else in the world.”

Parents say they do not view the move as a long-term solution – some children stay in Africa while others return.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advises against all travel to Somalia, including Somaliland, and highlights a heightened threat of terrorism and kidnappings, across Kenya.

But Amina sent her 15-year-old son to Somaliland, when she was worried about the new friends with whom he was mixing.

In his year there, she says he became a studious child again.

He had even wanted to stay in East Africa.

But within 17 days of being brought back to the UK in November 2018, he was stabbed four times.

“He’s been completely traumatised by the experience,” she says.

“They damaged his bladder, his kidneys, his liver. He’s got permanent damage.

“He was safer there [in Somaliland] than he was here… 100% more safe than in London.”

The alleged assailant is believed to have climbed up the balcony and made his way into the flat in Sheffield through the French doors, according to Ms Salim’s family.ADVERTISING

The mother-of-one was found unresponsive in bed by her aunt before being taken to hospital.

A 33-year-old cousin, who did not wish to be named, said: ‘We have got a big family and we are all distraught. She was found by our auntie because she was babysitting her daughter.

‘She went to the house to take her daughter back and as she got there she found Britney practically on death’s door.

‘When her auntie went in, she was unrecognisable. Her face was black and blue.’

The cousin said Ms Salim’s condition is ‘not getting any worse’ but she is still going in and out of consciousness.

‘Britney has responded well to the blood transfusion,’ she said. ‘It is just going to be a long waiting game.

‘She has woken up a few times and had outbursts of screaming. She is on morphine to deal with the pain. Her mum is just broken.

‘Police have not been able to get a full statement from Britney yet because she isn’t able to speak.’

The cousin added that Ms Salim’s family and friends have been collecting money for her daughter, Priya, who was staying with family at the time of the attack.

Detective Inspector Richard Wallis, the officer in charge of the case, said: ‘As part of our investigations into a serious assault which occurred on 12 April in the Fox Hill area we are seeking Shaka Williams.

‘Williams, 31, is known to frequent the Westfield, Halfway, Arbourthorne and Woodthorpe areas of the city.

‘If you have seen him or know where he is, we urge you to get in touch with us by calling 101 quoting incident number 561.

‘Alternatively, you can contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.’

Britain’s biggest police force are targeting dozens of wanted suspects by driving around London for a week – with their mugshots plastered on police vans.

The ‘targeted week of action’ by the Met Police will include an appeal to the public for any information regarding unsolved crimes in London.

Officers have put up 38 mugshots of wanted men and women on the sides of two police vans that will be driven around the capital all week.

Under ‘Operation Venice’, police are hunting suspected street robbers, burglars and others said to be linked to moped-enabled crimes.

One suspect, Derrick Roye, 47, is wanted in connection with a burglary in which a garage door on Seymour Road, SW19, was forced open and an expensive bicycle was stolen. He was said to have left his own bike behind at the scene.
Another, Enrico Martin, 18, is wanted for failing to appear in relation to a series of linked knifepoint robberies in 2017.
Chief Inspector Jim Corbett, from Operation Venice, said: ‘These offenders have callously robbed, stolen or burgled from communities, commuters and tourists within London, often using violence and weapons, for their own financial gain.
‘We are relentlessly pursuing violent offenders and bringing them to justice, but we need the help of the public as well. Somebody somewhere knows something about these criminals and I urge people to pass any information to us as soon as possible.

Irish police have joined the counter-terror probe after explosive devices with stamps issued in the Republic of Ireland were sent to three of London’s major transport hubs.

The improvised bombs arrived at Heathrow Airport, London City Airport and Waterloo station today in what terror police believe was a ‘linked’ series of packages targeting the capital’s major transport terminals.

The packages sent to Britain’s busiest airport and railway station were marked with a ‘love stamp’ issued by the Republic of Ireland in 2018, showing a decorative red heart and the words ‘Love’ and ‘Eire’.

Tonight Ireland’s Garda confirmed they were assisting Scotland Yard with their inquiries as it was claimed the packages had been sent from Dublin.

The device sent to Heathrow started to burn when the bag was opened, prompting office workers to flee the building as the small fire was quenched and specialist Met Police officers made the device safe.

Similar packages arrived in a post room at Waterloo – the UK’s busiest railway station – and an admin building at City Airport later on Tuesday, but were not opened.

No-one was injured by the packages and there was little disruption to rail or air passengers even as Scotland Yard’s Terrorism Command sealed off parts of the transport hubs. No arrests have yet been made.

Police said they were keeping an ‘open mind’ about a possible motive, as security sources said the devices did not appear to be sophisticated.

Tonight specialist officers are boarding trains and guarding station concourses to reassure passengers travelling home on trains and the London Underground, although the police cordon at Waterloo has been lifted.

The first package went off at the offices of Heathrow Airport bosses in a building called The Compass Centre, to the north of the runway, shortly before 10am today.

Police hunting for Libby Squire today removed computers from the raided home of a married Polish butcher as they zoned in on a pond, a stretch of riverbank and several derelict buildings near her student digs.

Detectives have sealed off Paweł Rełowicz’s rented house and towed away his silver Vauxhall Astra after they arrested a 24-year-old man on suspicion of abducting the missing Hull student, 21.

This afternoon officers stopped the public entering a large area of Oak Road playing fields surrounding a pond with a helicopter hovering above as police searched drains and bins. It is half a mile from Libby’s home.

Teams were also scouring a stretch of riverbank and a series of abandoned buildings – but officers turned walkers away and refused to say why they were back in an area they have already checked in the seven days since she vanished.

A forensics officer was also seen bagging up evidence and photographing an area of pathway leading into the cordoned-off zone.

Bacon factory worker Relowicz, who according to his Facebook profile is a martial arts enthusiast, moved into the raided property around a year ago with his wife Jagoda and their two young sons, Marcel, who is two, and Oliwier, who is just three months old.

The terraced house is less than a mile from where Libby was last seen sitting on a bench seven days ago and forensics officers were carrying out fingertip searches as detectives removed Relowicz’ belongings including a PC and a tablet computer.

Donald Trump will make his second visit to the UK in December for a Nato summit, it was announced today.

The US President is to join the regular meeting in London amid rising concern about the threat from Russia.

The news raises the prospect of another turbulent trip for Mr Trump – after his first dramatic appearance as President in July last year.

During that stay he managed to launch a savage attack on the PM’s Brexit plans, before giving a memorably eccentric joint press conference with Mrs May at her Chequers country residence.

Mr Trump is still due to make a full-blown state visit at some point but the trip has been frequently delayed amid fears of protests – which were also staged during his July trip.

Downing Street said today the two visits were ‘separate’. The state visit has not yet been scheduled.

Mr Stoltenberg said: ‘I am pleased to announce that Allies have agreed that the next meeting of Nato Heads of State and Government will take place in London in December 2019.

‘We are grateful to the United Kingdom for agreeing to host this meeting in Nato’s 70th anniversary year.

‘London was the home of Nato’s first headquarters. The United Kingdom was one of the Alliance’s twelve founding members and continues to play a key role in the Alliance, making essential contributions to our shared security.

‘The meeting in London will be an opportunity for Allied Heads of State and Government to address the security challenges we face now and in the future, and to ensure that Nato continues to adapt in order to keep its population of almost one billion people safe.’

The Duchess of Cornwall has issued a rallying cry to combat the ‘shaming’ litter crisis in the UK – as she was pictured dancing on a visit to a Jewish care center in London.

Not knowing the words or the steps, the smiling Duchess of Cornwall still gamely took the hand of Labour peer Lord Levy as he led her to floor at Jewish Care’s Brenner Centre in Stepney, East London, at an event to mark its 80th anniversary.

The 71-year-old royal was twirled around by a sprightly 86-year-old who could not believe his luck that one of the youngest women in the room wanted to dance.

Camilla, a keen litter picker herself, said pressure needed to be put on companies such as McDonald’s to encourage customers to dispose of their rubbish properly, possibly even through fines.

‘The places I drive about around the country, especially on motorways and major roads, when the grass has been cut, you see it completely covered with this terrible litter,’ she said.

‘We know we have to do something about it. Somehow we’ve got to get to the top [business] owners to find some way of fining their customers if they don’t put their cups and things into the bin.

‘I notice, certainly in Wiltshire, around a lot of the big stores and a lot of the McDonald’s, dare I say it, it’s absolutely knee-high in litter. It’s shaming, really.’

Camilla arrives at the care center to a guard of honour

Camilla was speaking during a visit to the Malmesbury Residents’ Association in Tower Hamlets, east London, which has been working with the charity Cleanup UK, of which she is president, to transform the area. She added: ‘We need a lot of young people to get out there on an afternoon, a nice afternoon, and pick up litter. We can get them all at it.’

The Daily Mail has campaigned tirelessly over litter in our towns and countryside.

Last year our Great Plastic Pick Up was hailed a triumph by Theresa May as 20,000 volunteers removed tons of rubbish the length and breadth of the UK.

In just three days, they collected enough litter to fill 17,000 wheelie bins and 120,000 bags of bottles, aluminium and waste. This Saturday the Mail will relaunch the campaign with Keep Britain Tidy to urge people to give the nation a spring clean from March 22 to April 23.

Camilla arrived at the Caxton Hall community centre yesterday through an honour guard of litter pickers held by pupils.

She was wearing a suitably green suit by Bruce Oldfield and carrying a £295 green DeMellier Mini Venice bag like the one the Duchess of Sussex has been seen with recently.

The young man who appears on the TV monitor is speaking to us from inside Singapore’s notorious Changi jail.

He is sporting a prison regulation shaved haircut and a white T-shirt bearing his inmate number (L218032018) and name: Ye Ming Yuen.

Yuen is a convicted drug dealer.

Normally, the Mail would not travel half-way around the world to conduct an interview — via a special video link — with such an individual.

Yuen, 29, was born and raised in London where his parents still live. He must also be the first former pupil of £37,000-a-year Westminster School to find himself locked up in top-security Changi.

He has been ordered to serve 20 years after being convicted of supplying cannabis and methamphetamines (‘crystal meth’ or ‘ice’) to his friends.

Yet, this is not why Yuen is at the centre of a diplomatic row between the UK and Singapore, which traditionally have close ties, or why he agreed to speak to us.
