Two officers face disciplinary action after a teenager who reported her stalker ex-boyfriend was fined for wasting police time months before she was killed.

Shana Grice endured months of stalking and harassment from her obsessed former lover, Michael Lane.

The 19-year-old reported her ex-partner to Sussex Police five times in six months, but was fined £90 for wasting police time and handed a with a fixed penalty notice.

Just months later Lane attacked his former girlfriend and slit her throat with a knife before setting fire to her bedroom to try to burn her body in Portslade, near Brighton, East Sussex, in 2016.

Sentencing judge Mr Justice Nicholas Green criticised Sussex Police for siding with the stalker when he jailed Lane for life with a minimum term of 25 years in March 2017.

A total of 14 officers were investigated by the police watchdog in the wake of Miss Grice’s murder.

Two police officers, one of whom has retired, will face gross misconduct proceedings in front of an independent chairman at public hearings on May 7 and 10, Sussex Police confirmed this evening.

Another police officer will face internal misconduct proceedings, which are carried out in private.

No further action will be taken over five other officers investigated by the Independent of Police Conduct (IOPC), while six other force employees – three officers and three staff – have already been handed ‘management advice and further training’.

The IOPC is understood to be recommending 18 new training measures for the force when it announces the findings of its investigation on Wednesday, according to Channel 4 News.

Lane’s trial prompted widespread calls for action to ensure victims are taken seriously by police.

He pursued Miss Grice by fitting a tracker to her car, stole a house key to sneak into her room while she slept and loitered outside her home. It later emerged 13 other women had reported him to police for stalking.

Singer Lily Allen, who was stalked for seven years, branded the case an example of police ‘continuing to ignore’ warning signs.

At Lane’s sentencing, Mr Justice Nicholas Green said officers ‘jumped to conclusions’ and ‘stereotyped’ Miss Grice.

Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services (HMICFRS) is due to publish its findings on how stalking and harassment cases are handled by police on Wednesday.

The inquiry was ordered in the wake of Miss Grice’s murder.

The death of student Libby Squire is being treated as a ‘potential homicide’, police said today.

Humberside Police found the 21-year-old’s body in the Humber Estuary earlier this week following a six-week search after her disappearance during a night out with friends in February.

The force confirmed today it is now ‘solely investigating’ her death as a possible murder and have stopped probing other causes.

A post mortem took place last night but police are not releasing the results due to ‘operational reasons’.

The University of Hull student, from High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, had not been seen since the early hours of February 1. She had been on a night out in Hull but is believed to have been refused entry to a nightclub and put in a taxi by her friends.

Humberside Police believe she may have ‘come to harm’ and a 24-year-old man suspecting of abducting her has been charged with a number of unrelated offences.

Officers confirmed that Polish butcher Pawel Relowicz, from Hull, was still under investigation, although he has never been charged in relation to her disappearance.

Mourners have left floral tributes in her memory today at a bench in Beverley Road, Hull, where she was last seen in February.

In a statement, Detective Superintendent Martin Smalley said: ‘Our thoughts remain today with Libby’s family and friends at this incredibly sad and devastating time for them.

‘The loss of a loved one is always an upsetting and traumatic experience to go through, but the circumstances surrounding Libby’s death will only intensify the heartache for her family.

‘Specially trained officers continue in supporting Libby’s family and we will do all we can to provide further support and assistance to them in any way we are able to.

‘The University of Hull have also created a space for tributes to Libby, which is open to both students and the community to attend and remember Libby and offer any messages of condolence.

‘In regards to our investigation, while we have considered throughout the missing person inquiry that Libby may have come to some harm, Libby’s death and the recovery of her body now leads us to solely investigate as a potential homicide.

A mother told her three-year-old son to be quiet as he was crushed to death by her boyfriend deliberately moving his car seat back, a court heard today.

Alfie Lamb’s head was wedged between the rear seat and the front passenger seat when Stephen Waterson twice moved his chair back ‘as far as it could go,’ a court heard.

The three-year-old sobbed and cried out ‘mummy’ when he was crushed by up to 81kg of pressure and started making ‘choking’ noises in the car.

Witness Emilie Williams, 19, who was sitting in the back seat of the Audi, claims Alfie’s mother told him to ‘shush’ after Waterson moved his seat into him for the second time.

Waterson, 25, and Alfie’s mother Adrian Hoare, 23, are accused of manslaughter after Alfie was crushed, starving his brain of oxygen and causing him to fall unconscious.

Alfie died three days after suffering a cardiac arrest at the couple’s home in Croydon, south London.

Waterson is alleged to have become irate as the boy was complaining he did not have enough room during the journey as he sat in the back footwell, between his mother’s legs.
