Rampaging armed men in military uniform have killed Reginald Dei, a Government House photographer, and one other person at Oweikorogha, Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.

Dei was killed alongside Seidougha Taribi, the Ward Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the area.

According to an eye witness who spoke with SaharaReporters, the two victims of the electoral violence were killed while they were in their houses waiting for the counting of their votes, which had been concluded in their ward.

The assailants were said to have moved to the houses to victims and shot them.

A statement by Chief Moses Cleopas, the PDP state chairman, issued on Saturday, noted that “the death of Dei and Seidougha brings the number of those killed by APC thugs, some of who were backed by soldiers, to three”.

Moses claimed that the thugs were identified to be working for the APC with the support of some soldiers. They had besieged the Bassambiri and Oluasiri axis of Nembe Local Government Area, where they engaged operatives in a shootout all night on Friday.

According to him, the attackers lost a member in the attack while several others were injured and taken to the hospital in Ogbolomabiri and Yenagoa.

He accused Chief Timipre Sylva, former Governor of Bayelsa State, and surveillance contractors in Nembe, Kodjo, as being behind the violence that rocked Opu Nembe and Bassambiri.
He stated further that “the rampaging APC thugs hijacked the electoral materials for the seven wards of Bassambiri and Oluasiri to Darius Hotel for thumb-printing”.

Similarly, soldiers protecting Professor Nelson Brambaifa, the acting Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), and thugs disrupted the voting in Agbere, Sagbama Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.

The materials for the elections were said to have been taken to the residence of Brambaifa, which led to a protest by the youth of Agbere community in front of his residence.

Melaye was asked to produce three sureties, one of whom is the clerk of the National Assembly. The clerk is saddled with the responsibility of producing Melaye when he is scheduled for arraignment.

A High Court sitting in Abuja has granted bail to Dino Melaye, the senator representing Kogi West district in the National Assembly.

Justice Yusuf Halilu granted bail to Melaye on grounds of ill health.

After surrendering to security agents on January 4, Melaye was whisked away by operatives of the Department of State Security Services (DSS) on January 11, 2019 from the Police Hospital in Abuja to the DSS medical facility still within Abuja.

The lawmaker, however, refused to enter the main building of the DSS centre and after spending a night on the floor, he was taken away by the Police.

Melaye is standing trial for his alleged culpability in the shooting on a policeman during an incident that occurred in July 2018.

On his bail application, Melaye was asked to produce three sureties, one of whom is the clerk of the National Assembly. The clerk is saddled with the responsibility of producing Melaye when he is scheduled for arraignment.

According to the judge, the other two sureties should be property owners within Abuja metropolis.

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar has warned against the forceful removal of the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Walter Onnoghen.

Onnoghen, who has been accused of failing to declare his assets and operating several domiciliary bank accounts, will be arraigned before the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) on Monday, January 14, 2019.

According to The Cable, problem started for the CJN when a group known as the Anti-Corruption and Research Based Data Initiative (ARDI) wrote a petition against him.

Reacting to the report, Atiku said Nigerians will resist any attempt to silence the judiciary.

The PDP presidential candidate also accused President Buhari of planning to get a new CJN who will do his bidding.

Atiku revealed that Dennis Aghanya, the Executive Secretary of the ARDI, the group that wrote the petition against Onnoghen, was the spokesman of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), Buhari’s former party before the merger that formed the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The presidential candidate said that there will be an epic battle if Buhari and the APC succeed in removing Onnoghen.

Atiku also faulted the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) for reportedly transferring the CJN’s case to the CCT, adding that the power to punish erring judicial officers rests on the National Judicial Council (NJC).

“The proper procedure would have been for the petition to be referred to the JSC of which Onnoghen is the Chairman, but he would have to excuse himself from the process. If found guilty, he could be asked to vacate his office as CJN, in addition to other punishments,” he added.

According to Daily Post, Atiku said “We have just been made aware of the plot by President Muhammadu Buhari the All Progressives Congress (APC) to sack Justice Walter Samuel Nkanu Onnoghen using flimsy assets declaration issues as a pretext. We are aware that there are plans to arraign Justice Onnoghen before the Justice Danladi Yakubu Umar led- Code of Conduct Tribunal on Monday, January, 14, 2019. The charge against Onnoghen, we understand has already been filed and served on him last Friday at his official residence in Abuja preparatory to his appearance at the Tribunal.

”But we warn that despite the clandestine meetings in the highest echelon of the APC and also involving some top officials of the federal government which include the Code of Conduct Tribunal, neither Buhari nor the APC can re-write the Nigerian Constitution just because of its impending defeat at the February 16, presidential election. Heavens did not fall when PDP lost to the APC in 2015. And heavens will not fall now that the APC is sure to lose to the PDP, seeing that the APC’s plan to rig in the forthcoming elections will not pull through.

“The car that was following ours doubled-crossed us at Ossisa town and one of the men jumped out from the car, and entered the passenger’s seat of the car I was driving. He brought out a pistol and asked me questions such as ‘where is your boss?’; ‘where are his children?’ All this time, a gun was pointed at my head. I was then ordered to drive straight to Kwale and from there, I was ordered to face Ogume road,” the driver told SaharaReporters.

ucky Okperi, the former Delta State House of Assembly member representing Isoko South constituency 1 and leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Isoko South Local Government Area of the state, his children and driver narrowly escaped assassination along Asaba-Kwale road.

SaharaReporters reliably learnt that on Friday, the lawmaker’s driver, simply identified as Rex, conveyed the lawmaker’s children from Oleh, Isoko South LGA where they went for Christmas celebration, to Asaba. On his way back to Oleh at about 5pm, he noticed that a Corolla car was trailing him.

Speaking with our correspondent via telephone, the lawmaker’s driver said: “My boss asked me to carry his children from Oleh back to Asaba since the Christmas celebration was over. On my way back, I noticed that a Corolla car with two unidentified hefty men was trailing me from Ogwashu-Uku.

“At this point, I had to accelerate. However, the car that was following ours doubled-crossed us at Ossisa town and one of the men jumped out from the car, and entered the passenger’s seat of the car I was driving. He brought out a pistol and asked me questions such as ‘where is your boss?’; ‘where are his children?’ All this time, a gun was pointed at my head. I was then ordered to drive straight to Kwale and from there, I was ordered to face Ogume road.

“I had no option than to obey and I drove into Ogume road. When we got to a very lonely forest, I was again ordered to drive inside the forest. Before I could say Jack Robinson, I was shot. As I was shot, I found a way to escape into the forest. As I was inside the forest, they started shooting sporadically and telling me to come out from the forest or they would burn my car. Before the Police arrived the scene, they had set the car ablaze.”
